How to choose where to erect your marquee

Not everyone has a perfectly manicured lawn, so what should you consider when deciding where to set up your marquee?

Land Conditions:

  • A perfectly flat, level area is not necessary, but it does make things easier. If you’re unsure, try placing some garden furniture on the spot you plan to use and see how stable it feels.
  • Slopes are preferable to uneven or bumpy surfaces. A marquee can be set up on a slight slope without issue, but very uneven terrain might present challenges. If the ground is sloped, avoid raising the dining tables, as this will leave the chairs at the wrong height.
  • Avoid waterlogged areas, especially in winter, to prevent dampness and muddy conditions inside the marquee.
  • Our DIY marquees can be erected on hard surfaces, soft ground, or a combination of both, as long as there is no significant height difference between the surfaces.

Positioning the Marquee in Your Garden:

  • Marquees are rectangular or square, so keep this in mind when measuring your available space.
  • Flower beds, small trees, and bushes can be incorporated into the marquee, often creating an attractive feature. However, remember that these will reduce the available space inside.
  • In winter, it’s best to place the marquee close to, or even connected to, your house to provide easy access for guests.
  • Consider having two layout options: one closer to the house for bad weather and one set further away for good weather.
  • If you’re hosting a smaller event in a large garden, positioning the marquee across the garden to create a courtyard at the front can help keep guests together and prevent the space from feeling too spread out.

How to anchor marquees down on hard surfaces

Portland Marquees are sturdy, box-like structures, making them suitable for setup on hard surfaces. However, proper anchoring is essential. While tie-downs are commonly used to secure marquees, this method isn’t always practical on hard surfaces. Here are some alternative anchoring options:

  • Bolting: On some hard surfaces, you can bolt the marquee directly to the ground using the holes in the footplates. A stronger option is to drill in an eye-bolt 1-2 meters away from the marquee and use straps similar to those found in tie-down kits.
  • Heavy Weights: Strapping heavy weights to the marquee is a popular way to anchor it on hard surfaces. The weights should be attached directly to the marquee, avoiding straps leading to weights placed at a distance, as this can cause the straps to loosen if the weight shifts. Here are a few common weighting options:
    • Water butts: Lightweight and easy to transport, but ensure access to a hose on site. Avoid long-term use due to the risk of standing water and Legionnaires’ disease.
    • Concrete blocks (or other heavy materials): Very effective for securing the marquee but can be cumbersome to move.
    • Vehicles: For short-term setups like exhibitions, marquees can be strapped to vehicles. Be sure to use secure fixings that won’t damage the vehicle.
  • Combination of Methods: In some cases, you can combine different anchoring techniques. For example, you might use tie-downs on one side of the marquee where there is grass and heavy weights on the other side on a hard surface.

Important Note: The metal weights used for gazebos (typically horseshoe-shaped) are not heavy enough to secure a commercial marquee.

As every site is unique, it is the responsibility of those setting up the marquee to ensure it is properly anchored.

The strength of 4m wide premier marquees

Our 4m wide premier Portland marquees are significantly stronger than the industry standard, as well as our own party tent and luxury ranges. This is due to the incorporation of several features commonly found in 6m wide structures:

  • Vertical and horizontal roof braces: These braces add substantial strength to the roof.
  • Intermediate purlins along each side: Positioned halfway down each side of the roof, these purlins provide additional structural support and reinforce the roof.
  • Wind-resistant 2m end panels: These are discussed in detail in a separate article.
  • Envelope-style roof: Also covered in a separate article.
  • Groundbars: Included as a standard feature for added stability.
  • Gable uprights at both ends: These allow for interchangeable side panels, increasing versatility.
  • Durable materials: All roofs and side panels are made from high-quality, 500gsm rip-stop PVC.

The triangular shape, known for its structural strength, is reinforced by the additional roof braces, creating a strong, durable frame for the marquee.

We believe that these features make our 4m wide commercial marquees the most durable and heavy-duty structures in their class, globally.

4x6m or 6x4m marquee?

In the marquee industry, the width of a marquee is always mentioned first when describing its dimensions. For example, a marquee that is 6 meters wide and 12 meters long is referred to as a 6x12m marquee.

There is often confusion between 4x6m and 6x4m marquees.

As illustrated above, the key difference lies in the width of the A-frame. A marquee with 4m wide A-frames and three 2m long bays is described as a 4x6m marquee (left in the diagram). In contrast, a marquee with 6m wide A-frames and two 2m long bays is referred to as a 6x4m marquee (right in the diagram).

The 4x6m model tends to be the more popular and slightly more affordable option for this size. However, a 6x4m marquee may be more appropriate in specific scenarios. For example, if you’re setting up against a house, you should aim for the flat gable to be adjacent to the house for better weather protection. If the available space is 4m deep and 6m wide, a 6x4m marquee is the better choice as it allows water to drain to the side, preventing interference with any door opening into the marquee.

What size marquee do you need for 110 guests?

The first thing to do is Measure your garden. If space is limited your guest list may be restricted by the maximum size of marquee able to fit in the space.

Once you have measured your garden you then need to work out if your guests will be seated or standing or a mixture of both.

Marquee seated capacity is calculated by using 5ft 6in round tables as is common in the marquee hire industry. This is the most efficient way to seat your guests to maximise space. Each 3x3m section of the marquee can fit 10 people at a 5ft 6in round table.

Standing capacity is calculated at 1.5X the seated capacity giving guests just under 1m square for dancing and space to move around.

It is also important to take into account buffet tables, dance floors, DJ or band areas as more space will be required for these. Buffet tables are usually 6ft trestle tables and don’t take up much room so an extra 2m at the end or side of the marquee is plenty. Bands and DJ’s take up roughly a 6m x 2m space to allow for all of their equipment and members.

Dance floors can come in various sizes but usually tables and chairs would be placed on the dance floor when guests are eating and then moved to the side of the marquee once the music starts in the evening.

It’s also important to remember that marquees can be joined together with a guttering kit to make them wider or longer. For example, two 6x12m marquees can be joined to make a 12m x 12m therefore doubling the capacity.

Therefore, the best size marquee for 110 guests would be a 6x14m / 6x16m without allowing for extras. If you are having buffet tables or music, consider going up to a 6x18m marquee. You could also use two 6x8m or 6x10m marquees next to one another.

Below is a rough guide for marquee capacities and sizes. Hope this helps.

What size marquee do you need for 80 guests?

Therefore, the best size marquee for 80 guests would be a 6x12m / 6x14m without allowing for extras. If you are having buffet tables or music, consider going up to a 6x16m marquee.

Below is a rough guide for marquee capacities and sizes. Hope this helps.
