Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the most frequently asked questions when customers call us or come into our show room.
What's the difference between PE, PVC & poly/PVC?
PE (polyethylene) is like tarpaulin material and comes in 80-240gsm (grams per square metre) where the heavier the material the thicker it is and the longer lasting it is. Poly/PVC is seen as a halfway house between PE and PVC. It generally only has a PVC coating on one side. We do not use poly/PVC as it is an inferior product to 100% PVC. 100% PVC is the premier marquee material although can come in many different qualities. At DIY Marquees we only use Duracoretex™ PVC for added durability.
What does gsm mean?
Marquee material is measured in weight, gsm stands for grams per square metre so one of the materials we use is 500grams per square metre PVC. Unfortunately that only tells half of the story as PVC is made up of many layers/coatings and the strength comes from the core material used (ie before the layers are added). We only use Duracoretex™ PVC with a reinforced core but there are much cheaper options available with a weaker core. Just because a fabric says 500gsm PVC doesn’t mean it’s heavy duty.
What are ground bars?
Ground bars are poles that connect the foot/base plates of the marquee legs. When they are all joined it increases stability making the marquee like a “strong box”
Are ground bars included?
Yes with all commercial, professional and deluxe marquees. They are a recommended extra on party tent and classic ranges. Ground bars add stability to any structure which is why we recommend them.
What are marquee tie downs?
Marquee tie downs usually refers to ratchet straps and stakes, also sometimes called marquee pins/pegs. We recommend one per leg of the marquee or 100kg in equivalent weight.
Can DIY Marquees be erected on hard standing?
You can use DIY marquees on hard surfaces such as concrete, tarmac, paving blocks or slabs. However it is important to consider how to anchor the structure down. Typically heavy weights or drilling and bolting is the method of anchoring a marquee on hard surfaces.
Can DIY Marquees be used without sides?
You can remove one side or all of the sides on your DIY marquee. We’ve designed them so they’re in 2m sections for added flexibility! However, marquees perform better in windy conditions with all sides on!
I’ve never put up a marquee before. Is it hard?
DIY Marquees are designed so anyone can put them up. The come with a comprehensive instruction manual, supportive instructional videos and expert advice from our team via telephone call or email. We used to be professional marquee hirers so we have been in almost every installation situation!
Marquee Flooring for Sale
Our marquee flooring packages are designed to be easy to lay whilst giving one of the best finishes available in a marquee using new carpet, available in red, green or honeybeige.
Included in each package is a non-breathable underlay, placed underneath the carpet when laying to prevent the build-up of condensation during your event (grass gives off a lot of water vapour if not covered). Grass is very tough so covering for a week or so will not generally cause any harm.
High Quality PVC Marquees
Over many years of manufacturing and supplying marquees, we have tested a wide variety of PVC materials. We now exclusively use Duracoretex™ PVC in all of our PVC DIY marquees due to its superior quality.
Our PVC has been tested in Intertek laboratories and proven durable by many marquee professionals we supply.

High Quality Marquee Framework
We use high quality galvanized steel frames in our marquees as well as extruded aluminium in our traditional marquees. Galvanizing prevents corrosion and often lasts longer than powder-coated frames. It is also easier to restore.
The strongest frames are in our Deluxe marquees with 50/54mm steel framework, additional leg braces, larger bolts, and steel fittings for the strongest DIY marquees on the market.
Event Planning Articles
We have an extensive library of event planning articles that are based on years of experience in the marquee hire trade.
How to connect your marquee to a house

There are usually two ways of connecting a marquee to a house:
1) butting the marquee directly up to the house so guests walk straight from one in to the other or
2) using a walkway to connect the two together.

Should I remove the sides of my marquee in strong winds?

No, a marquee is far more wind resistant with the sides on rather than off. For some reason there are many people who believe that leaving the sides off a marquee ‘lets the wind pass through’. I will try to explain below why this is not true and why leaving the sides off of a marquee actually makes it far more susceptible to the wind than leaving the sides on.

How to anchor your marquee down on hard surfaces

Heavy weights: Using heavy weights strapped to a marquee is the most popular method for anchoring marquees down on hard surfaces. Any heavy weight should be strapped directly to the marquee, try and avoid using straps down to a weight a short distance away from the marquee in case the weight moves and the strap can loosen. There are a number of different weighting options.

Best Practices in windy conditons

- (obviously) make sure the marquee is well anchored down. Tie down kits are good, additional stakes over groundbars and/or fixing down to buildings even better.
- The side of a marquee is more wind resistant than an end. Wind hitting the end of a marquee is blowing against a flat surface, when it hits the side there is the slope of the roof allowing the wind to pass over the top.

How long can a marquee stay up for?

Marquees are only designed as temporary structures, if you have them up for a long time then certain precautions should be taken. Checking it regularly for signs of wear & tear, checking the strength of bungees, making sure there is no water or snow gathering on the roof, not leaving it up in extreme weather conditions. All common sense stuff really.

How to clean your marquee
For splashed on mud you need to get hold of a power washer and a big tub of traffic film remover (TFR – basically concentrated washing up liquid, available from auto factors and used for cleaning lorry sides). Steam cleaners make life a bit easier compared to power washers but they’re a lot more expensive and a lot more problematic (I speak from experience).
